Frequently Asked Questions
Here you’ll find answers to our most commonly asked questions.
Why should I use a landscape designer if I already use a landscape maintenance company?
This is a great question! The biggest difference between a landscape designer, and a landscape maintenance company is that a designer specializes in the creation and implementation of a design, while the maintenance worker takes care of property upkeep tasks. Designers are usually dedicated life long artists, most of them earning a formal education in horticultural science. This gives them a broad advantage regarding plant selection and proper placement.
But, do I really need a designer if the mowing company I use say they can install my plantings for me?
What are the credentials of your mowing company? The truth is, there is no commonality between the 2 types of businesses other than the fact that they both work outside. Can a mowing company install a few plants? Sure. Comparatively, someone can take a pill for a headache, but that doesn’t make them a doctor. Without the proper knowledge of color, mature sizing, micro-climates, planting practices, and science, hiring un-qualified help can lead to disastrous results, costing in the thousands. About 20% of our business is fixing planting areas done with un-qualified help. This is proven when clients have the wrong plants in the wrong places, small or large, sun or shade. For example, some clients now have massive trees 4’ off their house foundation, because the previous installer didn’t have the plant knowledge to determine that the small tree in a pot at the time of installation was intended to be a fast growing, forest sized tree. Now the roots are destroying their walkway/driveway, killing the surrounding plantings, and potentially threatening the foundation of the home.
Are landscape designers expensive?
Considering the immense value you receive regarding their sharing of expertise in horticultural science, and artistic background, the answer is that they are absolutely affordable. In fact, unfortunately it costs many clients in the wasted thousands by not hiring a landscape designer for design/planting tasks. As mentioned in the previous question, about 20% of our business is fixing planting areas done with un-qualified help. Imagine spending thousands on a throw together garden, only to have it fail and then spend thousands on removing and re-doing it. Do it right the first time and enjoy it for many years to come.
